Coarse and synthetic Weil-Petersson geometry: quasi-flats, geodesics, and relative hyperbolicity

چکیده
We analyze the coarse geometry of the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmüller space, focusing on applications to its synthetic geometry (in particular the behavior of geodesics). We settle the question of the strong relative hyperbolicity of the Weil-Petersson metric via consideration of its coarse quasi-isometric model, the pants graph. We show that in dimension 3 the pants graph is strongly relatively hyperbolic with respect to naturally defined product regions and show any quasi-flat lies a bounded distance from a single product. For all higher dimensions there is no non-trivial collection of subsets with respect to which it strongly relatively hyperbolic; this extends a theorem of [BDM] in dimension 6 and higher into the intermediate range (it is hyperbolic if and only if the dimension is 1 or 2 [BF]). Stability and relative stability of quasi-geodesics in dimensions up through 3 provide for a strong understanding of the behavior of geodesics and a complete description of the CAT(0)-boundary of the Weil-Petersson metric via curve-hierarchies and their associated boundary laminations.

Large-scale Rank and Rigidity of the Weil-petersson Metric
We study the large-scale geometry of Weil-Petersson space, that is, Teichmüller space equipped with the Weil-Petersson metric. We show that this admits a natural coarse median structure of a specific rank. Given that this is equal to the maximal dimension of a quasi-isometrically embedded euclidean space, we recover a result of Eskin Masur and Rafi which gives the coarse rank of the space. We g...
متن کاملAsymptotics of Weil-Petersson geodesics II: bounded geometry and unbounded entropy
We use ending laminations for Weil-Petersson geodesics to establish that bounded geometry is equivalent to bounded combinatorics for WeilPetersson geodesic segments, rays, and lines. Further, a more general notion of non-annular bounded combinatorics, which allows arbitrarily large Dehn-twisting, corresponds to an equivalent condition for Weil-Petersson geodesics. As an application, we show the...
متن کاملPants decompositions and the Weil-Petersson metric
Since notions of coarse geometry and quasi-isometries were first introduced by M. Gromov, many studies of geometry have been renovated with its rough perspective. In this note we give an expository account of results of [Br] and of joint work of the author with Benson Farb [BF] that apply such a coarse point of view to the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmüller space. A natural graph of pants dec...

Let S be a surface with genus g and n boundary components and let d(S) = 3g − 3 + n denote the number of curves in any pants decomposition of S. We employ metric properties of the graph of pants decompositions CP(S) prove that the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmüller space Teich(S) is Gromov-hyperbolic if and only if d(S) ≤ 2. When d(S) ≥ 3 the Weil-Petersson metric has higher rank in the sense...
متن کاملClassification of Weil-petersson Isometries
This paper contains two main results. The first is the existence of an equivariant Weil-Petersson geodesic in Teichmüller space for any choice of pseudo-Anosov mapping class. As a consequence one obtains a classification of the elements of the mapping class group as WeilPetersson isometries which is parallel to the Thurston classification. The second result concerns the asymptotic behavior of t...
